Editor's Note: "Bachelor Cooking Secrets Revealed" is the first in a series. It’s hard to be a confirmed bachelor. It is difficult to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.  It is difficult to go out (or entertain at home) and be able to eat right most of the time. It’s enough to make one very frustrated. But, then, I just remember that I am mostly successful at eating well, staying healthy and I still have my hair. So, what the hey! Life is grand! But at what cost? Maintaining liberty requires eternal vigilance. Maintaining a good eating regimen requires open-minded thinking, new habits, a bag of tricks and - most importantly - rules. So here’s , the first look at some of the Lone Wolf’s rules. Some of my tricks – and other secrets of bachelor cooking – will be revealed in a later installment.

Rule Number One. Own a microwave. Obvious maybe, but vital to any bachelor. The better the microwave, the better the odds that a hungry bachelor can eat something hot, and hopefully healthy. Elsewhere on TheHungrySingle.com is an excerpt from the sacred scroll of microwave life, “Microwave Cooking for One” by the late Marie Smith. This book will make solo healthy eating a snap. This brings me to …

Rule Number Two. Maintain a reasonable amount of the proper cookware and gear to make healthy eating easy. Make your microwave part of a system – an advanced, healthy-food delivery system that will serve you - not frustrate you. The easiest way to do that is go to the Web site maintained Marie Smith’s daughter, Tracy Grant, MicrowaveCookingForOne.com. This site has hundreds and hundreds of pages of information, links and products that will turn even the laziest guy into a food delivery system engineer. (Just check out this Corelle Dinnerware page! Whew!)

Also, TheHungrySingle.com has plenty of food links and tips, as well as gear and other cool stuff.

As far as I’m concerned, the second most indispensable appliance in any bachelor’s kitchen is a George Foreman grill. I have mentioned the advantages of the Foreman appliance in this space before. This is a must have and you can get one here.alt

There are many, many other must-have appliances and gear to help you have a hassle-free healthy-food delivery system. Like wax paper. This will be an area of continuous presentation here at The Hungry Single.

Rule Number Three. Use your head. Think. Think (and learn) about healthy food and nutrition, healthy cooking and healthy eating. In the first place, this rule definitely applies to safety – food safety, safe use of your electrical or gas appliances and those sharp implements so necessary to fix stuff.

As for information and knowledge, The Hungry Single has news links to the Real Age Tip of the Day. (RealAge is one of the coolest sites on the Web. Check it out.) We also have News from two different news feeds at MedicineNet.com, the news service of WebMD. Finally, we have a great healthy eating news feed for Google. Read and use them.

Do not think about ways to shop and buy for one in a “family-size” world. That is the central purpose of The Hungry Single. Few areas of being a Hungry Single are as challenging as making sure you do not waste time, money or food. Shopping for one is an art. Study it with us here at TheHungrySingle.com.

Finally, if you are like your loquacious lupine linkster, constantly use the Web. But you already know that. You have already found the one spot on the Web that is looking out for single adults who live alone and want to eat and live well.

There are (a few) more rules from ‘ole LW. I will impart them soon.
